Dewatering/Washing/Screening
After "cooking" the pulp it is extremely important for the pulp to be washed as thoroughly as possible to avoid a higher consumption of chemicals in the bleaching process. The bleaching process is what give the pulp the respective brightness. Pulp can also contain contaminants in the form of knots, uncooked chips, bark and shives which can be removed by pressing the pulp on perforated screening plates. Pulp is run through this process prior to bleaching. Any chips, knots, and the shives are reprocessed into pulp. In several places after cooking or washing many types of screw presses are used to remove water from the pulp.
